oudry's painted menagerie

the getty museum, here in l.a., has a great exhibit going on. the collection of paintings by jean-baptiste oudry, who was one of the finest painters in europe during the 18th century, can be seen now through september 2nd.
"These paintings, not seen in public for more than 150 years, have been treated in the Getty Museum's Conservation Department over the past several years. Oudry's Painted Menagerie reunites them with a suite of other life-size portraits of exotic animals painted by Oudry and presents a selection of Oudry's drawings as well as contemporary decorative arts." they're beautiful and kind of spooky. the lighting. sort of macabre. but just incredible. more info and to check out the exhibit virtually, click here: getty

what i love most about this work is that oudry really got the 3 dimensional thing. like the rhino's skin. amazing. in the 1700s, no less.
(and I swear I'm not saying this with my eyelids shut and eyebrow raised)

I really want to see this. At least there are great images online, and books, for those of us who can't make it to L.A.
